Laser Cutting vs CNC Machining: Which Process Is Right for Your Project?

2026-07-20 · Laser Cutting, CNC Machining

If you're a maker, fabricator, or engineer in the Okanagan looking for precision metal parts, you've probably wondered: should I use laser cutting or CNC machining? Both processes deliver clean, accurate parts — but they excel at different things. Knowing which to choose can save you time, money, and a trip back to the shop.

When to Choose Laser Cutting

Laser cutting is your go-to for:

  • Flat sheet parts — brackets, enclosures, panels, mounting plates
  • Complex profiles — intricate shapes that would be expensive to tool
  • Quick turnarounds — send a DXF file, walk out with parts the same day
  • Low volumes — one part or a hundred, no minimums
  • Thin materials — up to ¾" mild steel, ½" stainless, ½" aluminum

Our fiber laser at Ingenious Solutions cuts up to 3kW of power, handling mild steel, stainless, aluminum, and more with ±0.005" tolerance. If your part is flat and you need it fast, laser cutting is usually the way to go.

When to Choose CNC Machining

CNC machining (milling and turning) is better for:

  • 3D features — threaded holes, pockets, stepped profiles, contoured surfaces
  • Tight-tolerance features — ±0.001" on critical dimensions
  • Round or rotational parts — shafts, bushings, custom fasteners
  • Post-processing — drill, tap, deburr, and machine in one setup

CNC machining takes a solid block or rod and removes material to create your part. It's the complement to laser cutting — not the competitor. Many projects use both: laser-cut blanks that go into the CNC mill for precision features.

Can We Do Both?

Absolutely. At our Vernon, BC shop, we offer laser cutting, CNC machining, laser cleaning, and laser marking — all under one roof. Many of our customers start with a laser-cut prototype, then bring the same part to us for CNC machining or laser marking as the project evolves.
